Acupressure For Labor

Midwives and health professionals alike are recommending maternity acupressure as a way of inducing labor naturally and relieving pain and nausea caused by morning sickness. Acupressure works along the similar principles as acupuncture but without the use of needles. Specific points in the body are stimulated very gently using pressure applied using either a thumb or finger.

There are specific points in the body termed the acupressure points and each contribute to balancing the body and stimulating a response in the body. Here are some tips on how to use acupressure for labor.

To self induce naturally, use the bladder point which is located one finger width above the buttocks crease halfway between the dimple in the buttocks and the spine. You will feel a ridge or depression here. Rub this point gently for 15-30 seconds using either your thumb or finger. Only use this if you are past your due date as it will induce labor.

To stimulate contractions and labor, rub the the spleen point gently. It is located on the inside of the ankle, four finger widths above the ankle bone (the raised bone on the inside of your ankle).

For pain relief the stimulate the hoku point which is located on the top of your hand in the webbing between your thumb and index finger. You will feel the point as a sensitive spot that feels bruised when you rub it. Use the thumb and index finger of your other hand to gently apply pressure to it. Practice this with your partner so you will know exactly what to do in labor. This point also stimulates contractions.
