Firstly, what is acupressure? Acupressure has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of illnesses. Acupressure is a technique that involves specific points in the human body. These points can stimulate contractions and induce labor.

Acupressure does not use needles to stimulate these points as used in acupuncture. This makes it very safe and pain free. In acupressure, pressure is applied to the points that need to be stimulated. Think about how you instinctively press your temples when you have a migraine. Pressure points work in very similar ways.

If you are past your due date, you can induce naturally with acupressure. Do not use these methods if you are not due or still in the early stages of pregnancy.

Three maternity acupressure points are listed below.

The Bladder point is located midway, one finger width above the buttocks crease halfway between the dimple in the buttocks and the spine. Rub this point gently.

The Hoku point is located on the top of your hand in the webbing between your thumb and index finger. To stimulate contractions, rub this point. Stimulation of this point also offers pain relief during contractions.

The Spleen point is located on the inside of the ankle, four finger widths above the ankle bone. Rub gently to stimulate contractions.

These are just a couple of points. For a complete, easy to follow step-by-step guide on maternity acupressure complete with instructions and photographs on the techniques click here.
